Doric columns were stouter than the Ionic and Corinthian styles of columns that existed during this time. The significance of the columns goes past just being a grand piece of architecture. The columns would vary from one another which would allow for the optical illusion that from a distance the columns looked distorted. This illusion is actually quite incredible and even when looking Within the Parthenon there were many different styles of sculptures. First there was Athena which was discussed previously and what are known as Ionic frieze, pediments, and Doric metopes. The Ionic friezes go around the outside wall of the Parthenon and measures approximately one meter high and 160 meters long14. The images depicted on this frieze are the people of Athens which shows the Panathenaic procession which was a major celebration in ancient Greece especially in Athens during this time period. The Pediments of the Parthenon are categorized into east and west sections. The west Pediment had faced the Propylaia and was showing the two Gods Athena and Poseidon during the period in which they were competing one another for honor and becoming the city’s supporter. The Doric metopes spread all the way around the building in which each side had told their own story15. On the West side the metopes were showing Greeks versus the Orientals, on the north showed the Greeks versus the Trojans16. The east side had represented the Gods versus the Giants and finally the south side had been a representation of Centaurs versus Lapiths. When the Parthenon was first built there were a total of 92 metopes and that was divided into having 32 on each of the sides and 14 on the front and back side as well. The friezes measured 325 feet long and approximately three foot in height. The statue of Athena had stood approximately 33 feet high and was made of ivory and gold. She was placed near the back of what is referred to as the central chamber of the Parthenon. Athena’s figure had been wearing a helmet and in one hand she had held a winged statue of victory and the other hand was placed on a shield. The opportunity arose to build the Parthenon after the Persians in 479 BC had destroyed the buildings that had previously sat atop the acropolis19. Once this war was over the leader of Athens Pericles had wanted to improve upon what had been previously in place hence the construction of the Parthenon began in 447 BC and the great statue of Athena was placed within the Parthenon in 438 BC20. The Parthenon was not always a place where the Greek goddess Athena was worshiped, in fact around 426 AD it was used as a Christian church. At this time the Parthenon had not been dedicated to Athena but instead to Hagia Sophia. This pattern had taken place throughout time when they switched dedication once again around the 600 AD. When going through these different dedications they had made some additions to the Parthenon including a church bell which was placed in the Parthenon along with an altar. The magnificent Parthenon had gone through many changes and the biggest was when a Venetian army had attacked Athens and the damage that the Parthenon had undergone was too much to repair and that is where it still sits and undergoes the wrath of time. The Parthenon has been around for centuries and will more than likely not be around for many more. There is only so much that can be done to preserve this magnificent building. The work that has gone into the Parthenon is amazing in itself without the fact that it was done during the fifth century BC. This is a beloved national icon within the Greek state. 4 Books That Show You How to Write 4 Books That Show You How to Write 4 Books That Show You How to Write By Mark Nichol No, that headline doesn’t read â€Å"Four Books That Tell You How to Write.† The verb is show, and that’s exactly what I mean. This post does not list writing guides, but if you want to learn how to create a memorable reading experience, follow the excellent examples below. Note that this is not a definitive list of the most exemplary books; it’s just four I’ve read recently that have fascinated me and made me think, â€Å"Gee, I wish I had written that† (and I can think of no better testimonial than that). 1. How to Distract People from the Fact That Your Book Is Educational by Making Them Laugh Book: In a Sunburned Country (Bill Bryson) Bryson, in this book and many others, sets out to entertain people and does so with great flair (and success). But he also loves to share his knowledge (and his passion for knowledge) with readers, and enhances nutritious information with tasty toppings of humor and whimsy. This book about his travels through and insights about Australia (a nation that, given its environment, is even more improbably successful than the United States) delights as it informs. Bryson has also written or edited books about science (A Brief History of Nearly Everything and others), language (The Mother Tongue: English and How It Got That Way and others), and more, and even when his work doesn’t live up to expectations (At Home: A Short History of Private Life), it’s still fun and fascinating. 2. How to Top Off an Engrossing Story About Exploration with an Ironic Twist Book: The Lost City of Z (David Grann) Few tropes stir the romantic adventurer in us as much as a jungle-exploration saga, and this book, based on the archetypal expedition into Green Hell from which popular culture has derived many of its notions about the subject, does the larger-than-life topic proud. The author retraces the steps of legendary Great White Explorer Percy Fawcett (allegedly an inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle’s Professor Challenger), who, accompanied only by his son and the younger Fawcett’s best friend, set out to find evidence of a great civilization in the Amazonian jungle. The members of the expedition never returned nor, apparently, did many other adventurers who sought glory by attempting to discover both Fawcett’s fate and the object of his quest. Grann concludes this mesmerizing tale with a wry realization about the expedition’s goal that’s just too good for any but the most adept Hollywood treatment. 3. How to Debunk a Myth with an Even More Compelling Story Book: Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War (Nathaniel Philbrick) Philbrick peels away the facile fiction about Thanksgiving by booking readers passage on a sorely overcrowded one-hundred-foot-long sailing ship with a hundred passengers and more than two dozen crew members and integrating these additional travelers, through commanding scholarship and vivid writing, into the historic settlement the colonists formed against all odds. The story of their harrowing, heartbreaking first winter and their fumbling attempts to get along with their native neighbors, and an accurate account of their day(s) of thanks, stripped of schoolbook holiday hoo-haw, is refreshing. This account is framed by details about what led a band of religious dissidents and assorted â€Å"Strangers† (split about evenly in numbers) to unite in this venture, and by chapters chronicling the tragic misunderstandings and missteps that led to war between their descendants and their erstwhile indigenous allies. Tied together seamlessly, these episodes describe in a nutshell the story of the United States. 4. How to Make Being a Dork Seem (Momentarily) Cool Book: Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything (Joshua Foer) Foer, the brother of the editor of the New Republic and of novelist Jonathan Safran Foer, holds his own against the literary accomplishments of his older siblings with this absorbing account of how he immersed himself in the highly esoteric world of memory masters and well, I won’t spoil it for you. Chancing on information about people who demonstrate prodigious memorization skills in competitions they train for with the intensity of Olympic athletes, Foer decides to try it out for himself, and takes us along for the ride. Along the way, we meet the man who inspired Dustin Hoffman’s character in Rain Man, as well as purported savant Daniel Tammet, whose memorization wizardry Tammet himself (perhaps disingenuously) attributes to autism, in addition to various mental athletes who seem to be exactly the type of poorly groomed, socially inept geeks you’d expect to find devoting much time and effort to a seemingly useless skill. The Personal Assessment of Management Skills - How from a Good Manager The Personal Assessment of Management Skills ï » ¿The Personal Assessment of Management Skills Self-assessments are important if a person wants to improve themselves in any way. You have to know where you are at before you start on a road to where you want to go. The Personal Assessment of Management Skills (PAMS) is a good way for a good manager to become better. With it, he or she is able to spot differences in how they see themselves and how others see them as well as point out strengths and weaknesses. Based on the norms for the survey, I have summarized my management skill as compared to other college students who have taken this assessment. The population mean was 394.35. My score was 359 which are in the bottom quartile. I was surprise by this because I thought I would be in the third quartile at least. I have also compared my scores with the average scores my associates gave me using the scoring key. Some areas showed greater variance between how I assessed my own management skills and how others assessed my management skills. Managing conflict as well as empowering and delegating were the two areas where my associates and I differed most. These differences can be attributed to certain realities. Others are not necessarily privy to all of the information available about an observable behavior. For example, what is known about a person may be divvied up in to four areas. The first area is what is known about the individual to the individual but not to others. The second is what is known about the individual to others but not to the individual. The third is what is known both to the individuals and to others, and the last is what is known about the indiviidual neither to the individual nor to others. With this in mind, it is easy to see how personal perceptions about ones self and ot hers may be skewed and thus differ. Based on the scoring key for the 10 major areas, I have identified three areas that stand out to as my greatest strengths and weaknesses. According to PAMS, my strengths are in managing conflict, empowering delegation, and team building; whereas, my weaknesses are in developing self awareness, creative problem solving, and gaining powerful influence. Interestingly, the areas where I differed most from the assessments from my associates were the areas in which our average scores demonstrated my strengths. I am not quite sure how to interpret this phenomenon at this time, but it makes for a noteworthy point in my discussion. In the first editorial by â€Å"The Sun† â€Å"No one is forced to fight† is a tabloid, the headline is very big and bold as is for the second editorial by † The Daily Star†, which is also a tabloid, called â€Å"They knew the risks. † It catches the readers attention straight away even at a glance. The first editorial by the Sun has two verbs in its headline. The word ‘No one’ is a pronoun that indicates/refers to people in general so by saying this the reader will be curious to find out as to what it stands for thus they will be enticed to read the article. The second article is similar to the first in the sense that the pro-noun ‘They’ is quite general, in order to cause the to look at the article in more detail or stimulate interest. The third editorial by â€Å"The Guardian† â€Å"One pummelling too many† is a broadsheet and already you can spot the difference with the headline. It is not bold or italic it is just normal writing. The word â€Å"Pummelling† is not frequently used by the masses, which would most probably capture a target audience. The fourth headline by â€Å"The Socialist worker† â€Å"Boxing bosses count the cash† is also a tabloid. Unlike the other articles it gives us a clearer picture of what the article is about because it is the only one that mentions the adverb ‘Boxing’ The Sun, Daily Star, and the socialist worker, context are less detail, they have short simple facts about the fight and so therefore is aimed at a very broad audience. The first article starts of with a fact but the writer then goes on to express his own views and therefore it is mainly opinions. For example â€Å"why should boxing be banned when all those sports continue? † and words such as brutal† and â€Å"cruel† are used to describe the event, which affects the reader’s emotions, making an incident where blood was involved come to their minds. On the other hand The Guardian newspaper provides a lot more detail with static’s. For example † Britain’s boxing rules have been tightened for over 300 years since the first bare knuckle fight was recorded†. The Guardian has used longer sentence structure in comparison to the other newspapers, the words are generally long and more than three syllables long for example words such as â€Å"neurological† are used, which is quite typical of a broadsheet newspaper as it has so much facts and uses complex vocabulary that it is only served for the needs of intellectual people. All the other newspapers are tabloids so they have used short sentence structure and short words for example is article two the longest word is â€Å"endeavour† where as that would probably be the longest in a broadsheet. The linguistic structure of the sun/daily star and the choice of words are more dramatic and sensation than the Guardian, for example: â€Å"The Sun† Ban boxing It’s too dangerous †¦ Can cause serious damage to the brain †¦. The fear of injury or even death Of course it is brutal and cruel Few of us would dare try it â€Å"The Daily Star† The fight was ferocious, brutal, bloody The end was tragic †¦. Plunge him to purgatory Everyone who watched this fight will never forget it â€Å"The socialist worker† is more concerned with human values than with Boxing itself. It is actually telling us how people have power over others and how they use and exploit them to such an extent that it leaves them paralysed. For example â€Å"to them [managers] boxers are little more than dogs† but than it goes on to give the writers own thoughts â€Å"but those in the ring are prepared to risk their lives because they see it as their only chance of achieving a better life. † The first article does not follow a balanced argument and is biased, what it does is it makes the reader think by using retheriotical questions. For example â€Å"how many jockeys are seriously injured falling of horses? † â€Å"How many rugby players are paralysed with broken necks? † â€Å"Why should boxing be banned when all those sports continue? † it lets you come to your own conclusion but then straight after that it says, â€Å"You cannot nanny people, however tragic the consequences of their actions might be. † Which then makes the reader completely lose track of what he was thinking and accept that what is written is true. This article is against Boxing being banned. The second article is clearly biased and in favour of boxing. If you take one glance at it you will notice that straight away in bold it says, â€Å"they are grown men free to make their own decision. † This article does not let the reader have any thought it is constantly trying to stimulate the readers mind into believing that to box is not a crime. In its last sentence it seems like the author wants people to be involved in committing acts of violence â€Å"don’t let the do-goodders diminish an heroic battle. † The third article is by the Guardian and is also biased and as you would of expected it to be it has used a lot of static’s and facts to persuade their audience that boxing should be banned. The fourth article appears biased that it inclines towards the winner because it is only the winner that counts the cash. On the other hand one could say that the bosses are yearning for their boxers to win so that they can get the money. This article is more about how the society is run than boxing itself because it says â€Å"boxing is a multi-million pound business† but its not the only sport where you can make a million pound. This author wants the class-dive system changed as he clearly outlines it in his last sentences â€Å"The real question is not whether boxing should be banned but whether we can rid of the system which creates it. † Coming to a conclusion I would say that the best newspaper which is more likely to make people think is â€Å"The Socialist Worker† as it would than be a need for one to understand the importance of society and how our we exploit it. After that has been done, than, you could start thinking about different other issues. My own opinion is that boxing should not be banned even after knowing the tragic consequences. I think that if you were to ban boxing there would a lot of unrest and protests so therefore the best way of preventing that is to allow boxing. If people are sane they will know the consequences of boxing and yet if they still want to continue we cannot stop them they have free will but they were warned. So if you allow boxing this way the decision is theirs (boxers) not anyone else’s and only they can be blamed for their actions.
